  • The University of Mines is Russia’s oldest
    higher education school devoted
    to engineering. It was founded
    on October 21 OS (November 1 NS) 1773
    by Empress Catherine II. Thus the brainchild
    of Peter the Great and Mikhail Lomonosov
    to train Russian specialists
    for mining was materialized.

  • The University has excellent
    research facilities and well-equipped
    laboratories for studying advanced
    mining and processing technologies,
    the use of mineral resources,
    and the development
    of country resource portfolios.


  • The University of Mines in Saint-Petersburg
    is one of the exemplary higher
    education institutions in Russia.

    both in Europe and in the world.

St. Petersburg Mining University has taken the 15th place in the area "Engineering - Mineral and Mining"   by the assessment results of the authoritative international ranking agency QS World University Rankings (Great Britain). The University has also been included in the TOP-50 world best technical universities.  The ranking was published on March 8, 2017.

Prince Michael of Kent was awarded the title of Honorary Professor of the St. Petersburg Mining University. The ceremony was held within the visit of a member of the British royal family to the oldest technical university in the country. It was dedicated to the starting year of science and education of Great Britain and Russia.

Arkady Dvorkovich, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, paid a working visit to the Mining University. Accompanied by Vladimir Litvinenko, the Rector, he took a tour around the University visiting, among other places, the Mining Museum and a number of new classrooms and laboratories.

Australia's Ambassador to Russia, Peter Tesch, gave the commencement speech for students of the St. Petersburg Mining University on a topic "The history and the contemporary state of Russian-Australian relations".  During the visit, he also held talks with the rector Vladimir Litvinenko.

The Mining University was visited by Zoya Zaitseva, the Regional Director in Eastern Europe and Central Asia of reputable QS Ranking Agency (Great Britain). She held a seminar for the university’s staff and discussed some topical issues with Rector Vladimir Litvinenko.

Rector Vladimir Litvinenko and President of TH Georg Agricola University  (Bochum, Germany) Jürgen Kretschmann signed  cooperation agreement. The document allows for the creation of joint educational and scientific programs.
