Thomas M. Leary, U. S. Consul General in St. Petersburg, made a working visit to the Mining University in order to see the University facilities and discuss the issues of academic cooperation with Rector Vladimir Litvinenko.

A native of Worcester, Massachusetts, Mr. Leary holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Assumption College and Master’s Degrees from Indiana University and Johns Hopkins University. His first post in St. Petersburg from 1999-2001 was the position of Public Affairs Officer. Following this assignment, he served as Press Attaché at the Embassy in Moscow from 2001-2004, also taking the post of Minister Counselor for Public Affairs in Islamabad from 2014-2015, in London from 2011-2014, and in Ankara from 2008-2011. He has also served in Copenhagen, Madrid, Lima, and Freetown, Sierra Leone.

Mr. Thomas Leary made a tour of the historical main building of the Mining University, including the library, museum and Church of Saint Macarius the Egyptian. Following the tour he emphasized that he was impressed by what he had seen: "The place is really beautiful; you can feel that the building has a remarkable history, and the present is equally excellent".

In the course of his talk with Rector Vladimir Litvinenko Mr. Thomas M. Leary emphasized the necessity of further cooperation between Russia and the US in the area of education. Today, regardless of the political situation, "it is essential to maintain student exchange programmes that allow young people in Russia to meet Americans and vice versa", the Consul said. No less important is the issue of "teacher exchange between the two countries, since it is vital for the future of Russian-American relations".

Rector Vladimir Litvinenko emphasized that the Mining University is open for cooperation with the representatives of higher education from the US and other countries, because the University administration sees academic and research partnerships with foreign higher education as its top priority. The Rector also invited the visitant to give a commencement address to the students of the oldest Russian institution for higher technical education. The parties agreed to soon resume their dialogue on prospective areas of cooperation.
