The rectors of the Saint-Petersburg Mining University Vladimir Litvinenko and the Freiberg Mining Academy Klaus-Dieter Barbknecht both signed a protocol of intentions to create a unified curriculum for material science, materials technology, and non-ferrous metallurgy. This is the sixth joint program that will be implemented by the two universities.

Cooperation between the oldest higher mining educational institutions in Russia and Germany goes in several directions. For example, St. Petersburg and Freiberg students have the opportunity to study with the accordance of a double degree program. This allows them to form a more powerful bundle of knowledge for a degree and then gives a tangible competitive advantage in the labor market.

Under the scheme of the dual master programs, Russians study in Germany now in such areas as "Automation of technological processes and productions", "Exploration and development of mineral deposits", "Mining". In addition, there is a student exchange, so called temporary direction of students to a foreign university for an internship.

In compliance, this kind of interaction requires the closest approximation of curriculums. This task is one of the priorities of the universities administration. The strategic goal is to create conditions for increasing students' mobility by unifying the profile educational programs implemented in the leading resource universities of the world.

A serious step in this direction was the decision to create a working group consisting of specialists from the St. Petersburg Mining University, the Freiberg Mining Academy and the Leoben Mining University (Austria). This structure should identify the challenges that impede the integration of the three higher educational institutions, and outline ways to address them.

During the working meeting Vladimir Litvinenko and Klaus-Dieter Barbknecht discussed the prospects for concluding a trilateral agreement on double degree programs. The parties noted that this document should, inter alia, determine the list of joint educational programs, the minimum level of threshold knowledge for each discipline, the requirements for the level of language proficiency, outline the forms and stages of the interim control.

Within the framework of the meeting, it was also discussed the participation of universities in the expanded meeting of the organizing committee of the Russian-German Raw Materials Forum. It will be held on June 9 in Freiberg.
