Rector Vladimir Litvinenko had a working meeting with representatives of Victoria State (Australia). The topics discussed were Russian-Australian Dialogue on Raw Materials and participation of the Mining University in International Mining and Resources Conference (IMARC) to be held in Melbourne.

The parties agreed to set up a working group to organize Russian-Australian Dialogue on Raw Materials, a platform where scientists, politicians and industry representatives of the two nations could discuss the topical issues of cooperation in subsurface use. The working group is to meet in June under the chairmanship of Rector Vladimir Litvinenko and John Butler, Commissioner of the Victoria State Government.

A similar form of cooperation has been maintained by Russia and Germany for 10 years already. The Russian-German Raw Materials Forum has seen discussions on a variety of issues, from environmental risk mitigation to expanding energy supply to Europe. This autumn the Multipurpose International Student Facility “Gorny” is to host Russian-British Dialogue on Primary Industry and Sustainable Development, the first event of this kind in the history of relations between the two countries.

The Australian side has also shown interest in developing a platform of this kind. The necessity to work together in order to improve the efficiency of research and of academic programmes and, consequently, enhance the development of mineral resources sector has repeatedly been emphasized by Peter Tesch, Australian Ambassador to Russia. Previously, in the course of his visit to the Mining University, he noted that “this partnership is a very important initiative for both parties, and it is going to be a foundation for Russian-Australian cooperation in general”.

The organizational committee of Russian-Australian Dialogue on Raw Materials will take place in the course of IMARC in Melbourne, which is to start on November 30th, 2017. Traditionally, this event brings together leaders of mining industry, politicians, financial and technical experts, and teaching staff. They discuss a variety of issues ranging from investing in minerals extraction and processing to process optimization and health and safety.

Another topic also raised during the meeting was the prospects of cooperation with two major Australian universities, the University of Melbourne and Monash University. The guests were also shown the Mining Museum and laboratory facilities of the oldest higher technical education institution in Russia, including the ones set up in cooperation with Orica LTD.
