Rector of Mining University Vladimir Litvinenko took part in the UNESCO committee meeting which took place in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation. The issue of establishing the International Center of Competence in mining education under the auspices of UNESCO was discussed at the meeting.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov,, chairing the meeting spoke in praise  of the contribution made by the Mining University  and thanked in person Vladimir Litvinenko for the contribution to the promotion of Russian system of higher education  abroad. He in particular emphasized that thanks to such mutually beneficial international projects image building component of national education is improving.

What is more this initiative is in the frame of the concept of sustainable development of humankind which is one of the UN primary programs. It will allow for raising competence of Russian engineers as well as to expand their global reach.

Minster of Education of RF Olga Vasilieva aligned herself with the colleague and pointed out that putting such projects into practice is the evidence of growth of reputation of national institutions of higher education.

It is to be recalled that on the 12-th of December the Chairman of the Government of RF Dmitiry Medvedev signed an order on establishing International Center of Competence in mining education under the auspices of UNESCO on the basis of Saint Petersburg Mining University.

Previously Executive Board of UNESCO at the 202-nd session which took place in Paris voted unanimously  for establishing The Center of Competence on the basis of Saint Petersburg Mining University. Taking the decision Executive Board of UNESCO specified that the Center activity conform fully to organization’s program priorities and made an appeal to all states “to cooperate actively with the International Center of Competence in mining education in the Russian Federation”.

The originators of the Center establishment were rector of Saint Petersburg Mining university Vladimir Litvinenko, president of the Institute of materials, minerals and mining (IOM3,London) Martin Cox and former Director-General of UNESCO Irina Bokova. The primary objective of this institution will be International certification of engineers.
