She,in a point of fact , was one of  initiators f setting up  International Competence Center in Mining Education under the auspices of UNESCO.  On October, 13 UN Executive Council on Education, Science and Culture at its 202-nd session voted unanimously for setting up International Competence Center in Mining Education under the auspices of UNESCO on the base of Saint Petersburg Mining University. Appearance of the Center should become an important part in achievement of such objectives of sustainable development, approved by UN, as improvement of quality of university education, combating climate change, protection and restoration of ecosystems. The first step was taken in December 2015 when Irina Bokova and Vladimir Litvinenko signed a relevant communiqué.

“Improvement of quality of university education must become a significant part in achieving the objectives of sustainable development. Another main focus is implementation of the system of  lifelong proficiency enhancement for specialists of extractive industries and processing plants. For this very reason UNESCO promoted the idea of setting up International Competence Center in Mining Education”- said ex- UNESCO Director-General”.

Rector on Mining University, in his turn, said that the Center will facilitate improvement of quality of vocational education and training:

“We have formed an organizing committee which unites universities of mine engineering, and now   there are 800 of such institutions of higher education. International Competence Center must become an effective tool being instrumental in enhancement of quality of training of specialists and steady increase of their qualification due to implementing the system of lifelong learning.”.

CEO of PAO “PhosAgro” Andrey Guriev pointed out that cooperation with UNESCO is one of  the priorities for the company:“ Nowadays it is time of “green” chemistry: an opportunity to influence the future of our planet by means of significant scientific projects has emerged. Our joint work including partnership within the frames of International Competence Center under the auspices of UNESCO is effective in combining challenges of economic development with  environment protection. It is a matter of great importance for future generations. In addition, realization of these projects  contributes to promoting  global  food security”.

Also worth noting that on the 22-nd of September, the International Council of university rectors held in Saint Petersburg approved the establishment of the Competence Center.
