1929 - Professor of the Mining Institute Ivan Bakhurin established the Permanent Surveying Committee attached to Scientific Technical Councils of coal, ore and petroleum industry.

1932 – PSC was transformed into Research and Development office of Surveying (RDOS). Later at the basis of this Committee the All-Union R&D Institution of Mining Geomechanics and Surveying was organized due to the expansion of research activities from theoretical research of petrophysics to applied issues of optimal deposit development method with most complicated mining and geological conditions.

2007 - For execution of order of Rosimuschestvo on keeping the research part of OAO “VNIMI” at the University of Mines on the basis of research personnel of OAO “VNIMI” the Scientific Center of Geomechanics and mining industry issues was established.

It had:

  • 10 laboratories
  • 14 Doctors of Science
  • 41 Candidates of Science

Leading research team is Geodynamic safety.

2010 – the center activities were awarded the prize of Saint-Petersburg Government

2011 – award of RF Government

Scientific and research-practical results of the center:

  • Developed method of geodynamic zoning which enabled reconstruction of block structure of rock mass and identification of potentially hazardous zones in rock mass in mining and other methods of subsurface management.
  • Discovered the effect of zonal disintegration of rock mass around deep underground workings and developed geomechanic basics of mining in extreme stressed block mass.
  • Developed prevention methods of rock and rock-tectonic bursts in mines, worked out measures for reducing geodynamic risk in mineral production.
  • Determined the type of impact of active faults on geomechanic and geodynamic processes in rock mass, pipeline, railways and other engineering projects accident risks.
  • Developed methods of pit wall and slope face stability improvement taking into account rock mass structural features, and monitoring of status and stability of disposal area and tailings.
