USEFUL INFORMATION

In this section we suggest you use the recommendations of the staff of the Main Library on rules of admition and finding information, compiling of bibliographic lists (to essays, term and degree works), use of catalogues and databases.

Tips to students

In this section you can find recommendations of the employees of the Main Library: regulations on joining the library and guidelines for using it, help with compiling of lists of references (to essays, reports, term papers and graduation theses) and information on using catalogues and databases.

The first place in the library where students have to come is the department of educational literature and lending library (3rd campus building, First Floor, Room 3103).

In early September full-time students, enrolled at the University by rector's order, are given their library cards (students must have a student ID card to get them) here, in the department of educational literature in the Main Library.

Students of the correspondence department are enrolled in the library upon the presentation of the student ID card and a photograph for a library card.

On library enrollment the students of the first year are given guidelines for using of the library cards and the library itself.

Readers are given a library card, which is the only document for getting literature in all circulation departments and reading rooms. Personal signature on a library card is a reader’s acceptance of the Library Rules.

When leaving the library, students have to return all the literature on hands and have a clearance list signed in the lending library (3rd campus building, First Floor, Room 3103).

It is absolutely forbidden to lend your library card to another person.

If you lose your library card you will be given a duplicate (the cost of duplicate corresponds to the order № 65 on paid services provided by the Main Library of the University of 28.02.2001).

Books are given to the students for a semester. After the end of the mid-term exams the students have to reregister their library cards again. At the end of the spring session, for the summer period, students have to return all the books on hands.

To take courseware from the library a reader needs to fill in the reader's slip. It is necessary to specify your personal details: name, number of a library card, date and information about the book: cipher (index of the shelf), author, book's title, place and year of publication (if it is a multivolume edition, it is needed to specify the number of the volume) and put your signature at the bottom.

Catalogues

Student’s requests are very different: sometimes they need to find a specific book by a certain author; get to know what periodicals on a particular branch of knowledge the library owes, find out what scientific studies were and are conducted at the university, etc. It is impossible to answer all these questions with a single catalogue, so there is a system of library catalogues.

To use the catalogues to find or select the literature needed, it is necessary to know what catalogue and when it is better to use.

In the Main Library of the University both card and electronic catalogues are available.

There are alphabetic, thematic and systematic card catalogues.

Alphabetical catalogue of the Main Library contains different types of documents:

  • Alphabetical catalogue (AC) of technical and scientific literature (published before 1917 in Russian and foreign languages);
  • AC of technical and scientific literature (from 1918 to the present);
  • AC of socio-economic literature and fiction (since 1930);
  • AC of educational literature (since 1952);
  • AC of Doctoral Dissertations (since 1952);
  • AC of reports of scientific research of the University (since 1947);
  • AC of abstracts (since 1998);
  • AC of state industry standards (since 1960);
  • AC of periodicals (since 1930);
  • AC of literature for official access (since 1936).

Using alphabetical catalogue, you can find out:

  • If  there is a certain book in the library, the author and the title of which are known to the reader
  • Which of the works by an author and the work about him ( his life and work) are available in the library
  • What republications of a publication are available

In order to get information about the availability of a journal, a newspaper or a publication such as "Proceedings of ...", "... News of…." you need to use the alphabetical catalogue of periodicals.

Thematic catalogue of the library contains scientific literature:

  • Thematic catalogue (TC) of technical and scientific literature (published before 1917 in Russian and foreign languages);
  • TC of technical and scientific literature (including publications from 1918 up to present).

Thematic catalogue shows the contents of the periodicals. The readers are supposed to use it to:

  • Find literature on a specific issue or subject;
  • Search for a publication  if the exact title or an author's name is unknown

In the Thematic Catalogue bibliographic records are arranged in alphabetical order of subject headings. It shows the contents of the library collection of publications and provides a simple and quick search on a particular issue.

Systematic catalogue contains socio-economic literature and fiction.

The readers are supposed to use systematic catalogue if they need to:

  • find out books of which branches of knowledge the library owes
  • find literature on a particular topic, issue, subject
  • find an author or an exact title of the book, when its contents are known

Electronic catalogue combines alphabetical, thematic and systematic catalogues. It allows to search in any field of bibliographic description.

Electronic catalogue is created on the basis of automated information library system «Mark-SQL».

In the Main Library there are:

  • Electronic catalogue of books
  • Electronic catalogue of abstracts and doctoral dissertation
  • Electronic catalogue of research reports
  • Electronic catalogue for official use only

Search via electronic catalogue can be carried out in the internal network of the University, in the reading rooms and information center (room 1165).

Databases of the Main Library contain information about periodicals and publications, collections of works, sections of monographs, handbooks and manuals.

Bibliographic databases contain materials on mining, geology, nature protection, metallurgy and benefication, industrial economics, higher education, of socio-economic issues, the works of scientists of Mining University.

Available databases:

  • Articles (published before 2000)
  • New articles (from 2000 to the present time)
  • Socio-economic articles (published before 2000)
  • New socio-economic articles (from 2000 to the present time)

Search through the databases of the Main Library can be carried out in the internal network of the University, in the reading rooms and information center (room 1165), via a search engine on the official website of the Mining Institute: www.spmi.ru or in the Main Library. All the resources are available to the users registered on the web-site.
