THESIS PAPER REQUIREMENTS

 

Criteria to be met by Candidate of Sciences and Doctoral theses

Preparation and typography of Candidate of sciences and Doctoral theses and thesis abstracts should be carried out in accordance with the directive of the government of the Russian Federation № 842 of 24 September 2013, the national standard GOST R 7.0.11 - 2011 "THESIS AND THESIS ABSTRACT". The Structure and Rules of Typography. M.: Standartinform, 2012 and other existing and new regulatory documents of the Ministry of Education and the State Commission for Academic Degrees and Titles of the Russian Federation.

The Doctor of sciences thesis is a scientific certification paper, in which the author uses research results to elaborate on a theory, the totality of which can be qualified as a scientific achievement, or which solves a scientific problem; such a thesis has important political, social, economic, cultural or economic value or offers new technical, technological or other solutions, the introduction of which make a significant contribution to the development of the country.

The Doctor of sciences thesis is presented in the form of manuscript, scientific paper or monograph. A thesis in the form of a scientific report is prepared on the basis of the totality of previously published research and development works in the respective branch of knowledge.

The Candidate of sciences thesis is a scientific certification paper which presents a solution to a problem that is relevant to the development of a certain branch of knowledge, or which provides new technical, technological or other solutions, which are essential for the development of the country.

The thesis must be written by the author independently, and have an inner unity; it must contain new scientific results and ideas put forward for public defense, and represent the author's personal contribution to science.

In a thesis which is of an applied nature, information about the practical use of the author’s research results must be given, whereas a thesis which is of theoretical nature must have recommendations on the use of its scientific findings.

The main scientific results of the thesis must be published in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

The number of publications that outline the main results of the thesis for Doctor of sciences thesis in peer-reviewed journals must be:

  • In the field of art and culture, economic science, social sciences and the humanities – no fewer than 15.
  • In other fields - no fewer than 10.

The number of publications that outline the main results of the Candidate of sciences thesis in peer-reviewed journals must be:

  • In the field of art and culture, economic science, social sciences and the humanities – no fewer than 3.
  • In other fields - no fewer than 2.

Publications which lay out the main scientific results of the thesis are made equivalent to patents for inventions, utility model patents for industrial designs, patents for selection achievements, computer program certificates, databases, topology of integrated circuits in accordance with the established procedure.

Degree candidates must make reference to the author, and/or source of borrowed materials and individual results.

The author of the thesis must mention the fact that the applicant carried out the results of scientific work personally or that the thesis was co-authored.

 

Thesis structure and submission guidelines

Structure of thesis written in the form of a manuscript

A thesis written in the form of a manuscript must have the following structure:

a) A title page;
b) A table of contents;
c) The body of the text;

  1. An introduction;
  2. The body of the thesis;
  3. Conclusion;

g) A list of abbreviations and symbols;
e) A glossary of terms;
e) A list of references;
g) A list of supporting data*;
i) Appendices*.

Note: A list of abbreviations and symbols, a glossary of terms, a list of supporting data and appendices marked with (*) are not mandatory elements of thesis structure.

 

Structure of the thesis in the form of a manuscript

The introduction to the thesis should include the following main structural elements:

  • Relevance of the research topic;
  • Degree of elaboration;
  • Goals and objectives;
  • Scientific novelty;
  • Theoretical and practical significance of the work;
  • Methodology and research methods;
  • Provisions for the defense;
  • Reliability and validation of the results.

The body of the text should be divided into chapters and paragraphs or sections and sub-sections, which are numbered in Arabic numerals.
In the conclusion of the thesis, the author must state the final results of the research, recommendations, and prospects for further development of the topic.

Structure of the thesis in the form of a scientific paper

A thesis in the form of a research report must have the following structure:

a) Cover;
b) Table of contents;
c) Text of the thesis:
1) Introduction;
2) Body text;
3) Conclusion;
g) List of works published by the author on the topic of the thesis.

Text of the dissertation in the form of a scientific paper

The introduction to the thesis in the form of a scientific report should include the following main structural elements:

  • Relevance of the research topic;
  • Degree of elaboration;
  • Goals and objectives;
  • Scientific novelty;
  • Theoretical and practical significance of the work;
  • Methodology and research methods;
  • Provisions for the defense;
  • Reliability and validation of the results.

The body of the text can be divided into chapters and paragraphs or sections and sub-sections, which are numbered in Arabic numerals.
In the conclusion of the thesis the author must state the final results of the research, recommendations, and prospects for further development of the topic.

The structure and design of the thesis abstract

The abstract of the thesis must be printed in hard copy, and must summarize the main content of the thesis. The abstract is written for a thesis, presented in the form of a manuscript or published monograph.
The thesis abstract should include:

a) The cover of the thesis abstract;
b) The text of the thesis abstract:

  1. General description of the work,
  2. Main content of the work;
  3. Conclusion;

c) List of works published by the author on the topic of the thesis.

The general characteristics of the work include the following main structural elements:   

  • Relevance of the research topic;
  • Degree of elaboration;
  • Goals and objectives;
  • Scientific novelty;
  • Theoretical and practical significance of the work;
  • Methodology and research methods;
  • Provisions for the defense;
  • Reliability and validation of the results.

The main content of the abstract gives a summary of the content of the chapters (sections) of the thesis.
At the end of the abstract the author must state the final results of the research, recommendations, and prospects for further development of the topic.

Rules for the list of papers published by the author on the topic of the thesis and bibliographic references in the text of the thesis

The list of papers published by the author must be made in accordance with the requirements of Standard 7.1, and bibliographical references must be made in accordance with the requirements of GOST R 7.0.5.
