History of the Faculty

TTo provide the oil industry with engineering staff qualified in geology and oil exploration and production, in 1948 the Oil Faculty was created, which ceased its activities in autumn 1959. The faculty included two departments, Oil and Gas Field Prospecting and Exploration (the ‘Oil Geology’ specialty) and Drilling Technologies and Methods (the ‘Oil and Gas Well Drilling’ specialty). The first and the only dean of the Faculty was Professor M.V. Romanov. At the same time the Geological Prospecting Faculty (from 1953 to 1955 together with the Geophysical Faculty) trained reservoir geophysicists in the specialty ‘Geophysical Methods of Oil and Gas Field Prospecting and Exploration.’ In 1955 the Oil Faculty stopped admitting students, and in 1957 the last petroleum engineers graduated from the Faculty. During the period from 1948 to 1959. the Oil Faculty trained 484 petroleum engineers (geologists, geophysicists, and drillers).

On September 1 2009 the Oil and Gas Faculty was established at the Mining University, which included three departments:

  • The Department of Oil and Gas Field Development and Operation (Head of Department - Professor Mikhail Konstantinovich Rogachev);
  • The Drilling Department (Head of Department - Professor Nikolai Ivanovich Vasilyev);
  • The Department of Oil and Gas Transportation and Storage (Head of Department - Professor Alexei Anatolyevich (until July 2012) , Associate Professor Gafur Khalafovich Samigullin (since January 2013) .

The Faculty offers Bachelor’s, Master’s and Engineer’s degree programs in two areas and four specialties.

Currently, the Faculty has approximately 1,200 students.
