Brief Historical Overview

The department of Organization and Management of the Mining University is more than 75 years old. In the result of its efficient work a widely-recognized R&D called Rational Subsoil Management and a well-known pedagogical school in the field of industrial management have been established.
The department’s strategic development is carried out in accordance with the Program of National Research Universities’ development. The department is the structural subdivision of the only existing high school in the Northwestern region of Russia providing professional training of specialists in the Russian mineral resources sector.
The department provides training in the following academic specialties: Economics and management of the mining enterprise, Enterprise management, Logistics. It also provides training under the Bachelor and Master programs in Management. There is an economic course in the curriculum of the mining, construction, oil and gas, electromechanical, and energetics faculties, and in the institute of extramural education, provided by the teaching staff of the department.
The teaching staff of the department have trained more than 3000 mining engineers, managers and economists working for the mineral-resource complex (MRC) of Russia, of the CIS countries and in distant foreign countries. Many outstanding scientists, specialists and chief executive officers successfully working in mining companies, industry and mining construction, government authorities, scientific research on mining and project institutes, and engineering and consulting companies, are former students. The current demand for this kind of highly qualified specialist is determined by the dynamic development of the mineral resources sector of Russia, the Northwest and Arctic regions including innovative areas such as hydrocarbon mining on the Arctic shelf, manufacturing of rare earth metals, and manmade deposits refineries.
Full and part-time postgraduate study is provided under the academic specialty 08.00.05, National Economics and Management, and in the following fields: Economics and management of mining enterprises, Economy of natural resource management. About 100 candidate dissertations were defended as well as some doctoral dissertations.
