Department of Foreign Languages

The teaching of foreign languages, namely German and French, began at the Mining University in the late 18th century. The first language teacher was I. I. Khenmitser, a poet, writer of fables, and translator. Since 1938 the Department of Foreign Languages has had the status of being a separate unit within the University structure.
The Department currently teaches over 2,880 full-time and extramural undergraduates and about 50 master’s students, as well as around 90 first and second year graduate students.
The Department maintains strong links with the British Council, the American Language Center, the Language Centre in Grenoble, and with foreign languages departments at other universities in St Petersburg and many other Russian cities including Tomsk, Ulyanovsk, and Penza.
