Brief historical overview of the department

The department was founded in 1774, and the fundamentals of physics have been taught there since that time.

Heads of the Department of Physics:

1774 - 1798 - Renofants I.M., Professor, graduate of the Freiberg Mining Academy, Germany. ‘The First Fundamentals of Physics’ by Ebergard was translated from the German.
1798 - 1802 - Kraft Login Yuryevich, Academician, worked under the supervision of Leonhard Euler.
1802 - 1831 - Volgemut I.N., Professor, graduate of the St. Petersburg Mining School.
1831 - 1836 - Shcheglov Nikolay Tikhonovich, Professor, author of the first textbook Initial Fundamentals of Physics.
1836 - 1866 - Professors Glukhov Vladimir Semyonovich and Somov Andrey Ivanovich; Lents Robert Emilyevich, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
1866 - 1890 - Krayevich Konstantin Dmitriyevich, Professor, author of a famous course in physics, considered the best in the country, till 1930.
1890 - 1894 - Sadovsky Aleksandr Ivanovich, Professor. He is known for the demonstration of the possibility of direct transformation of light wave energy into mechanical work (Sadovsky phenomenon).
1894 - 1918 - Shatelen Mikhail Andreyevich, Professor, who introduced the teaching of electrical engineering as a sub-division of physics.
1914 - 1930 - Maizel S.O., Professor, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Laureate of the State Prize, Honored Master of Science and Engineering.
