Brief Historical overview of the Department

In Leningrad, and later on in St-Petersburg, highly qualified experts for the biggest car and tractor manufacturing factories in Leningrad and the Northwest region studied at the Northwest State Technical University’s Automobile and Tractor Department, which was later renamed as the Department of Motor Transport.

The Institute trained specialists in different branches of engineering, transport and economics in Russia, through full-time, part-time and distance learning courses. In 2002 the Institute received the status of a University and was renamed the Northwest State Technical University. In 2007 the Department of Motor Transport was divided into two smaller departments, the Department of Automobiles and Automobile Economy and the Department of Transport Organization and Management of Road Transport. Professor Egorov A.B. was appointed as head of Department of Automobiles and Automobile Economy.

At the Northwest State Technical University, engineering specialists are trained in the academic specialty 190601.65, through full-time, part-time and distance learning courses.

Analysis of results of the selection committee for the past few years demonstrates an increased demand for this specialty (with competition for places on the first state-funded course of 1.3-2.2.) The Department had a branch in the Ardis company and conducted educational work not only in St Petersburg, but in many branch offices, representative offices and continuous education centers in the Leningrad region, Vyborg,  Gatchina, Lomonosov, Luga, and towns in the Murmansk region – Zapolyarnyi, Kandalaksha, Kirovsk, Kovdor, Olenegorsk.

In 2011 the Northwest State Technical University became part of the State Mining University, now called the National Mineral Resources University (The Mining University). The Automobiles and Automobile Economy Department was renamed as the Automobiles and Vehicle Fleet Department (Head of Department-Professor Egorov A.B.). The Department trains competent engineering specialists in academic specialty 190601, Automobiles and Automobile Economy, and bachelors in specialty 190600, Technical Maintenance of Automobiles (in the Automobiles and Automobile Economy specialization).

The Department’s scientific research and academic staff are of a high level. Staff include 8 highly qualified teachers: one professor and 6 associate professors have scientific degrees and titles, one senior scientist defended their Candidate degree in 2012. For students and postgraduates the Department offers preparation and advanced training and refresher courses for future leaders, specialists and entrepreneurs of St Petersburg companies, which already include many University graduates.

The advanced training and refresher courses faculty (1971) was subsequently converted into the Inter-sectoral regional center for training and retraining personnel.

Over a number of years, the Department has trained more than 6,000 highly qualified specialists in the field of Automobile and Tractor Engineering (according to the specialization). Many of them occupy leading positions in transport and other companies in St Petersburg, Moscow, Petrozavodsk, Vyborg, Kovdor, Tikhvin, and abroad.

Graduates of the Department work successfully in transport companies, station and service automobile centers, in the State inspectorate Station for traffic safety, the Onega Tractor factory, private and state companies and offices.
